my favorite twitterware apps

2

Twhirl – Twhirl is a popular desktop client based on Adobe AIR so it requires the AIR download. You’ll find AIR useful for other apps also. Twhirl has a lot of cool features including multiple Twitter accounts, connect to Friendfeed, post image to Twitpic, post to Pownce and Jaiku simultaneously, and search using Tweetscan. I use it on my Windows Vista sidebar along with . . .

AlertThingy! provides a connection to twitter, friendfeed, flickr, tinyurl and allows cross commenting. It’s better than it sounds and is used as a twitter replacement by many who want to make more sense out of twitter and narrow down their focus on specific people and topics.

TwitterCal – This service allows you to post events from your Google calendar to your Twitter accounts.

Twitter Digest – This tool allows you to subscribe to a message stream from a Twitter user of a group of users on the web or through an atom feed.

Summize A Twitter search engine, contender for the top app in this category.

Flaptor Twitter Search A simple Twitter search engine which generates an rss feed. Also provides trends, comparisons.

del.icio.us twitter tags – what people are bookmarking about twitter lately

TopTweet – This site provides you updates from the top Twitter personalities.

Twitter100 – Allocates a box to each of the people you follow on a single page and displays their latest tweets.

Quotably – Shows Twitter user’s conversations in a threaded conversational style making it easier to follow.

Tweetburner – Tweetburner lets you track what happens with the links you share on Twitter.

TwitterLocal – This shows you all the tweets on a google map from your local area and generates an RSS Feed of tweets.

TweetCloud – Let’s you make a tagcloud from a twitter user, also indexes del.icio.us

Tweetpeek – You can create a group Twitter feed with Tweetpeek.

Twitku – Mashup of Twitter, Jaiku, and Pownce public timelines. You can also post from its interface.

TwitterNotes – You can create notes on TwitterNotes using Twitter and tagging your notes.

post twitter, jaiku, tumblr, pownce at the same time

2

Are you overwhelmed with your miniblogs, presence sites, and social networking sites.  Here’s how to just make one entry and post it to all them.   Thanks to frantic industries for providing 90% of the following instructions and the graphics.

You only have to post to Pownce. If you need a Pownce invite I have a few left. To find your Pownce RSS feed go to the following URL:

http://www.pownce.com/feeds/public/springnet/

Of course you won’t be springnet but someone else.

Next, register with Twitterfeed. If you don’t have an OpenID you can get one over at MyOpenID – you’re going to need it sooner or later anyway. Create a new feed in Twitterfeed and add the Pownce feed to it; make sure to uncheck the “Include description” checkbox, and set the update interval to 30 minutes.

TwitterFeed

However, Pownce and Twitter aren’t enough for me; I want to add Tumblr and Jaiku into the mix. The problem with Tumblr is that it won’t recognize the Pownce feed. No worries, though, go to the Twitter feed you’ve forwarded your Pownce feed to, click the RSS icon and add that feed to Tumblr (as text).

Tumblr

Finally, open up your Jaiku profile, click on Feeds (Edit) and add an RSS feed. You can use the Pownce feed or the Twitter feed – they both work pretty much the same.

Jaiku

That’s it – by posting on Pownce you now automatically update all four services at the same time. Now, if only someone would create a Miranda Pownce plugin…

Btw, my Pownce/Twitter/Jaiku/Tumblr stream is a lightweight combination of some posts from springnet and some of my personal thoughts. If you’d like to follow any of them, here are the links: Pownce, Twitter, Jaiku and Tumblr.

twitter is exploding like a supernova!

0

My twitter site has exploded with followers. Over 400.

But twitter itself has exploded like a supernova overnight, going from 600 tracked on twitterholic to 13,000 last night. I’d guess it’s over 15,000 as of this red hot second. I talked with the twitterholic folks and they agreed with me that it’s like dealing with a runaway train. The site itself it under a crushing bandwidth load.

Twitter is great. It’s sms messaging and web messaging all rolled in to one package and it operates like a miniblog. It let’s you know what everyone is doing quickly.

Finally, the promise of real social networking is at hand. The last few days have been changing days in the life of the net.

I’ll have a lot more to say about twitter.

Here’s a blog past from my twitter friend Alex Nesbitt “buena vista” that’s typical of the kind of enthusiam and fervor there is for twitter. Direct quote follows.

1. It’s meant I’ve kept in touch a little more with one of my dear friends I was neglecting. In fact I’ve even seen him more partly because we’re both twittering. Here’s a couple of random examples…

“Dana Power, a computer programmer from Raleigh, N.C., says her brother who lives in Texas introduced her to Twitter so they can stay in touch: ‘I hardly ever corresponded with him, but with Twitter, I can see what he is doing at a given point in his life,’ she says. ‘It makes me feel more connected to him somehow.’”

Leisa tells a nice story about Twitter helped her get to SXSW.

2. I’ve loved watching the community create it’s own ‘rules of engagement’ and I’ve been facinated by all the blog posts I’ve read on this phenomenon; Like David Armano’s at Logic + Emotion. There are thousands more…

3. It’s a cross between IM and a mini blog – you can access it from both PC and mobile terminals so it’s easy and accessible.

4. I control it. I can twitter as often as I like. I can choose who sees me and who I see. Ican be public or secret. I’m a Twit!

5. It’s a growing ecology. Expect mash-ups with google earth and flickr soon. There’s already Twitterholic.com – expect ‘Twitterholics-anonymous.com’!

Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention twittervision which is really blowing the lid off everything. It’s television for the twitter age, on a google world map it shows you every tweet from every twitterer in real time. All twits, all the time. Mind boggling, the whole twitter phenomenon.

Twitter.com

Twitter, says the official website is a “ Whole World in Your Hands”

What is twitter?

“Twitter is a community of friends and strangers from around the world sending updates about moments in their lives. Friends near or far can use Twitter to remain somewhat close while far away. Curious people can make friends. Bloggers can use it as a mini-blogging tool. Developers can use the API to make Twitter tools of their own.”

Ok… so how does it work?

“You can send updates in three ways: send a text message from your mobile phone, type a message from the Twitter site, or instant message from Jabber or Gmail chat. (support for AIM and other chat services coming soon!) Start by texting the word help to 40404 if you’re in the United States. For international folks, we have different numbers. Write us and we’ll give you yours.”

I heard about twitter from Cote on his drunkandretired podcast.

Web 2.0 Toolbar

3

Here’s a plugin for both IE and Firefox that I recommend highly – ptw

From the faq at http://web20toolbar.com

What is the Web 2.0 Toolbar?

It’s a small plugin for your browser that contains all of the most popular content from the web 2.0 sphere in one spot…your browser. The best Social Bookmarking, Pictures, Videos and News all one click away.

Does it Work With IE, FireFox & Flock?

Yes – for FireFox & IE…It does not work with Flock (working on it…love Flock) and I have not tried it on other browsers. Check back ofter to see the updates.

How do I “SUBMIT IT” to My Digg, Del.Icio.us or other social linking site?

When you are on a page you like, just click the “SUBMIT IT” button on the toolbar and select the link site you have an account for…you need your own account on each site to use this. I have also inlcuded the “Onlywire” link that will allow you to post to multiple sites at one time.

Where do I get it?

Right here, Right now (Baby). The Web 2.0 toolbar is a small app that resides in your browser – simply install it and go.

Tour de France alp d’Huez – the moment of truth has arrived

0

Alp d’Huez – the first major climbs of the Tour de France
picture left – “No dad, I beat you by 30 minutes on Alp D’Huez, not 20 minutes.” a tour watcher at TourWatch 2005 at Central Market.  You’ll see more of this little scene in the world premiere of our upcoming video podcast of TourWatch 2005 on July 30th.  We’re not at Central Market this year watching the Tour, but we have video of last year’s huge event that we’ll publish online.

So today is Alp D’Huez and I’m watching on OLN.  This is Floyd Landis chance to put his stamp on the Tour de France.  But there are many challengers.  Usually, the Tour the winner of today’s stage goes on to win the Tour de France.

Tour de France Stage 5 – flying Australian

0

Austin, Texas – Last year we were sitting at Central Market watching the Tour de Lance and this year we are at home watching OLN channel 470 on Time Warner (and getting more work done). OLN is doing their usual terrific job. Beauvais to Caen – The fifth stage of the 2006 Tour de France is getting under way today, Thursday in the northern French city of Beauvais.

Yesterday the flying Australian Robbie Mcewen won the sprint and Thor Hushovd got “relegated” to 148th place, I guess for pushing the guy next to him near the finish. Pooh!

Floyd Landis is playing it cool riding in the “safety zone” outside of the dense peloton. Phonak is riding out in front most of the time. Today’s stage 5, which covers 225 kilometres or 139.81 miles to the city of Caen in Normandy, presents the 172 riders left in the race with only four modest climbs and is likely therefore to end in another mass sprint to the finish.

1 kilometer = 0.621371192 miles

World road race champion Tom Boonen of Belgium had been expected to rule the stages, but his best showing so far has been a second place on Monday. The 25-year-old sprint specialist for the Quick Step team has been upstaged by last year’s Tour de France sprint champion Robbie McEwen, who won his second stage of this year’s Tour on Wednesday and took over the green jersey of the sprint points leader.

However, when Thursday’s stage got under way, Boonen was still dressed in the Tour de France’s most important color, the yellow jersey signifying the leader in the overall standings. He leads another sprinter, Australian Michael Rogers, by 1 second, with American George Hincapie 5 seconds behind in third place. The standings are not likely to change much until Saturday’s 52- kilometre individual time trial, which may go some way towards revealing the contenders for this year’s Tour de France title.

Is this the broken Tour?

0

http://www.olntv.com/tdf/ said it

If at first you don’t succeed, keep on trying. This was the motto of Matthias Kessler who stuck to his guns and won the classic stage from Esch-dur-Alzette in Luxembourg to Valkenberg in Holland.

The previous day he had been wiped out just 50 years from the line, but not this time. It seems a lot of riders were tired after over 10 hours beneath a very hot sun in the past two days.  But behind the joy of a German winner, the was a lot of sadness as Alejandro Valverde, Fred Rodriguez and Eric Dekker all left the race with broken bones. Fred is the main lead-out man from the US for Aussie Robbie McEwen.   Fast Freddy, as he is known fell badly with Dekker and first reports say that he broke his wrist while Dekker has done the same to some teeth. All three were personalities that the race badly needs, but the loss of Valverde means the loss of a real overall favourite.  This, ironically, will favour the fortunes of American favourites George Hincapie, Floyd Landis and Levi Leipheimer, who today saw a danger man leave the Tour.

end quote

This year’s Tour de France, man.  A lot of broken men, broken bones, doping allegations, Lance sitting at home in Austin.  What’s going on?  I’m watching this year, and pulling for Hincapie, Landis, Leipheimer and the Norwegian Thor Hushov (it’s in my blood).

We think we may have one of the more interesting and exciting web development projects on the net right now.  It’s tag based searching with the display output being a slide show.

About 3–4 weeks ago we launched a site call http://web2.0slides.com and it got a surprising instant response.  It’s a slide show of 1,400 of the top new web 2.0 web sites.  Within two days of in house launch, we started getting blogged, listed, rated, linked to and buzzed about and we couldn’t figure out why.  Then we realized it was because we were getting noticed in referral logs by the web masters whose sites we were showcasing in our slideshow.

We’re planning several major releases of http://web2.0slides.com , http://tagslides.com and http://sportslides.com which will expand the idea of web2.0slides into all other major topics and categories that we can develop.

Chasing Lance film debuts on Travel Channel Thursday Dec 22 at 7 pm CST

Lance Amstrong News on our Blog – The “docureality” show produced by the Discovery Networks Travel Channel will air on Thursday night, Dec 22 on channel 58 (Grande Communications) and channel 33 (Time Warner).

Many local Austin media outlets carried coverage of this event. On the last day of the Tour de France several thousand people showed up to cheer Lance on and sign several giant yellow cards that the Outdoor Life Network brought to the event.

Here’s the email from producer Bill Delano about the event

bside.com provides websites for film festivals, best of SXSW

0

Listen to the podcast http://austincast.com/podcasts/a6031406.bsideberkowitz.mp3 I am never wrong. That’s what the t shirt says. If I get caught by bside wearing it in one of the lines for a film at SXSW I might win a video ipod. These guys “get it”; every year there’s a standout at the SXSW trade show and these guys are clearing in first place this year. They have a great idea and it is full of potential for growth. Here’s the skinny. bside approaches film festivals and offers them free websites. And the websites are visually appealing, full of features and tools and have a great personal calendar that film goers can use to organize the films they want to see. What’s in it for bside? They get to cherry pick the best films and sign them up for a film deal. You see, they’re first and foremost a film distributor and they choose their films by watching the websites they create and follow the buzz. So far they’ve done the Austin Film Festival and they have several more lined up. If you’re a film festival, watch out. These guys are headed your way. If you’re a film maker looking for a distributor, you might want to find ways to send your fans to their websites and get them to create buzz. There is so much potential in this project for the fans of film festivals. I can see these guys expanding this concept with podcasts, videos, interviews, online polls and reviews, blogs, and more. Best of show at SXSW Interactive. No doubt. bside.com
