Andrew Donoho, Web Theorist with IBM’s Emerging Internet Technology Team, has a long history working with both web standards and implementations. He was an early participant in crafting XHTML v1.0 and v1.1 and SVG v1.0. He has been creating and pushing implementations of the bi-directional web since 1999 and is extending that idea to building a Co-Web with a scalable UI for the last 18 months. He is trained in experimental physics with a degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He still lives in Austin with his wife.

Lindsay Campbell did hundreds of episodes of the insanely popular Wallstrip and is now doing something totally new and different, a show about news and politics. We luckily catch her in an interview on day 1 of SXSW. There will be blog is Lindsay’s clip from sxsw which includes two cuts of austincasts Paul Terry Walhus talking about Matt Mullenwegg and “wholesome, family podcasts”. “MobLogic shamelessly pimps fellow bloggers in a pathetically transparent attempt to promote itself” it says on moblogic.tv’s episode page.

Norman Mailer’s wife speaks at the Texas Book Festival just a few days before his death. His sixth and last wife, married in 1980, was Norris Church (nÃ©e Barbara Davis), a former model turned writer. They had one son together, John Buffalo Mailer, and Mailer informally adopted Matthew Norris, her son by her first husband, Larry Norris.
Norris Church Mailer is the author of a previous novel, Windchill Summer. She was raised in Arkansas and now lives on Cape Cod. Her husband of thirty-one years, Norman Mailer, died just days after this talk.

Continuing with a series I started yesterday as foreplay to SXSW in March, thereâ€™s another KLRU special on the nostalgic drag hangout and restaurant, Les Amis. I spent a lot of time there. OK. Call me a slacker. One of my exes worked there. I was there for the last day celebration. Les Amis was part of the axis of slackerville, consisting also of the Kenny and Joniâ€™s Omlettry and the Magnolia Cafe.

If LizLambert’s snappy hotel do-over and its resulting documentary film confirms that not all of old Austin should be considered sacred ground, then Nancy Higgins’ elegiac, heartfelt Viva Les Amis is the flipside of that particularly well-thumbed coinage.
Using footage filmed at and interviews with former employees, regulars, and assorted hangers-on of the late, lamented Les Amis Cafe (now, cruel irony, a Starbucks), Higgins’ film both mourns the passing of the UT area’s artistic and intellectual (and drunken) nexus and celebrates the plainly odd notion that a Parisian-style sidewalk cafe-cum-lifestyle could blossom so deep in the heart of Texas in the first place.
As for this third season of SXSW Presents, festival producer Matt Dentler notes, “The big difference is that we are expanding the episodes to include not just the films themselves but related conversations and panels with the filmakers and figures in the local film and arts community who will be hanging out, talking, and just kind of sharing their thoughts on the films.
The idea of this whole show in the first place was to try and bottle what an experience at a film festival â€“ particularly South by Southwest â€“ would be like. But on your television.”
Times for episode premieres are 9pm, unless otherwise noted. In January, BBQ: A Texas Love Story, Pedal, and two shorts programs will air, but dates and times are TBD.
My idea for the movie biz challenge.
Take the best of the Alamo Draft House concept of having food and drink served on counters at your seat and merge it with a low key touchscreen at each seat for ordering food and products, and roll in a perpetual “film festival” ambience and theme.
I can elaborate on all these in detail if you’re interested.
I have a friend in Austin who owns the old Aquarius movie theater in South Austin and he’s looking for a revival of it. This would be an ideal test bed.
You’ve covered the kids and rowdy cell phone users. This would be for the rest of us. The SXSWers, the boomers, the quiet crowd.

Ok, blog reader if you’re scratching your head I need to fill you in on a little background. Over the last few days, Mark Cuban has issued a “movie business challenge”. It’s … well, here it is:
This is an open challenge. You come up with a solution, you get a job. Seriously.
This is the problem that consumes me more than what Free Agent we are going to sign. How to get the NBA to get their act together. Which 7-11 Im going to run by to get a sandwich. Its that important.
Only HDNet takes more time out my day than trying to solve this problem. Its the holy grail of the movie business. How do you get people out of the house to see your movie without spending a fortune. How can you convince 5 million people to give up their weekend and go to a theater to see a specific movie without spending 60mm dollars.
For those of you doing the math. You are right. Its not unusual to spend 8, 10 , 12 dollars PER PERSON that goes to a movie in the opening weekend. Shoot, its not unusual for studios to spend that much per person to get people to go to the theater through a movies entire run !
How crazy is it to spend more on marketing than the revenue recieved when they go to the movie ? Its double crazy because that revenue is split with the theater. So if a studio spends 12 bucks to get someone to go to the theater, they might only be getting 4 dollars back in return.
You would think that there has to be a better way than spending 1x, 2x, 3x or more times the initial revenue received opening weekend or week ? Right ?
For all of you thinking that there are other downstream revenues such as PPV, DVD, TV, whatever….no shit. Yes, those revenue streams will benefit from the initial spend, but they dont make the economics of getting people into theaters any less frightening.
We are looking at affiliate programs. So people with lots of myspace or other social network friends could get a buck or 2 or 3 if someone goes from their myspace page directly to fandago, moviefone, movietickets.com etc and buys a ticket to a film of ours prior to its release. Get 100 friends to buy tickets to a movie, get a 100 bucks from us.
We are looking at other similar ideas.
We already do movie marketing 101. We do buzz marketing. We put up videos all over the net. We set up websites, myspace accounts for the movies and its characters, we work with movie forums, we buy ads, etc, etc, etc. If its been done before, we are doing it.
So if you want a job, and have a great idea on how to market movies in a completely different way. If your idea works for any and all kinds of movies. If it changes the dynamics and the economics of promoting movies, email it or post it. If its new and unique, i want to hear about it. If its a different way of doing the same thing you have seen before, it probably wont get you a job, but feel free to try.
So go for it. Come up with a great idea that i want to use and I will come up with a job for you to make that idea happen.
Vince Young and Cat Osterman: Big 12 Athletes of the Year
Vince Young and Cat Osterman have been named the Big XII Players of the Year. Vince Young led his team to a last minute victory in the Rose Bowl and became the first person to pass for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season. Cat Osterman had a 38-4 record this season with a 0.42 ERA. She pitched 36 complete games with 28 shutouts, 5 no-hitters, 11 one-hitters, 12 two-hitters and also set a CWS record with 18 strikeouts in a single game.
So it’s not too surprising that Cat and Vince were also nominated for the same award at the 2006 ESPYS. Cat won an award for best female college athlete, Young won for “championship performance” and UT’s victory over Southern California in the Rose Bowl was named best game.
Lance Armstrong emceed the event and did a great job as a deadpan comedian, proving that Saturday Night Live wasn’t just a fluke. He pointed out Austin’s Mathew McConaughey in the audience as the “sexiest man alive” and then chided the audience that you don’t all have to look at him, we know what he looks like, then he motioned to Gyllenhaal, the co-star of “Brokeback Mountain,” and said “Up here Jake, eyes front!” Answering his own question “What am I doing here” he said he told the producers “Are you kidding, I would give my left ball” to do the gig.
The actors, who’ve been photographed recently clad in Spandex and biking with Armstrong, were in the audience at Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre. Armstrong, in a reference to Gyllenhaal’s Brokeback Mountain role, asked why Gyllenhaal was sitting in the front when Armstrong thought he preferred to be “in the rear”. . . Alp d’Huez – the first major climbs of the Tour de France
